Who does the Chatham County Literacy Council serve?
If you are a Chatham County adult who needs to improve your reading, writing, math or English-language skills to succeed in daily life, you are eligible for our services. We’ve had students from their 20s to their 80s, from all different backgrounds.
What classes do you offer?
We offer instruction in reading, writing, basic math, ESL (English as a Second Language) learning, GED (high school equivalency) preparation, citizenship and computer literacy. Students meet in small group classes or one-on-one with a tutor, depending on the subject and location.
How much does tutoring cost?
Nothing. We provide tutoring, textbooks, workbooks and other study materials at no charge.
How can I sign up?
It’s easy. Contact us to schedule an interview so that we can learn about you, then meet with us to complete your application and to take a quick test. Don’t worry, the test isn’t pass or fail – it just tells us your skills level so that we know where to start. We’ll also want you to tell us about your goals and about when and where you can take classes. We should be able to match you with a tutor pretty quickly – within a week to a month.
How much time will I need to spend on my studies?
To make good progress, you’ll need to commit to at least two tutoring sessions or classes per week. Each will last 1 to 1½ hours. You also should plan to spend about some time each day on homework and outside reading.
Where would I have to go to take classes?
We offer morning, afternoon and evening group classes in Siler City and evening group classes in North Chatham County. See our Schedule page for details. One-on-one sessions are available at locations across the county. You and your tutor will work out a time and place convenient for both of you.
Who are the tutors?
Most of our tutors are volunteers. Many are retired and have college degrees. They come from a variety of backgrounds – from teachers to engineers to doctors, and everything in between. All have been trained to help you meet your short-term and long-term learning goals.
How will you pick a tutor for me?
Some tutors have a knack for teaching ESL, or reading, or math. Some have experience with a wide range of students. We’ll match you based on your needs and the tutor’s skills and interests. If we don’t already have the right tutor for you, we’ll try hard to recruit one who can help you meet your goals.
