A path to success

The Chatham County Literacy Council is a non-profit agency created to help adults acquire the literacy skills they need to be successful in life. Because we are community-based and volunteer-driven, we are able to focus on promoting adult literacy in our community one person at a time.

The needs in our county are great:

* 17% of our county’s adults never earned a high school diploma; 7% never made it through 9th grade.

* Nearly one-fourth of the adults who didn’t graduate from high school live in poverty.

For those struggling residents, the CCLC offers free, confidential, one-on-one and small-group tutoring in reading, writing, ESL (English as a Second Language) learning, GED preparation, basic math and citizenship. Services are available at our Pittsboro and Siler City literacy centers and at other locations throughout the county.

We are now helping more than 150 residents develop the literacy skills they need to get a job or promotion, understand a prescription, read to their children, balance a checkbook, fill out an application, get a driver’s license or simply maneuver more successfully through daily life. We are eager to expand our services to other Chatham County neighbors who need assistance to reach their goals.

CCLC was created in 1990 as a “friends helping neighbors” group and was reorganized in 2007 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We work in partnership with Central Carolina Community College to enlist and train volunteer tutors and to provide services.
